Adding Women to the Story of the Early Church

As General Seminary continues to celebrate the accomplishments of women at General and throughout the Church, “Adding Women to the Story of the Early Church,” with VK McCarty (Class of '11), takes a fascinating look at a dozen female church leaders whose voice and wisdom are remembered—and indeed recorded—in the New Testament, throughout the Church Fathers and other ancient sources. Their faithful voices can be heard across the centuries as they pray and mentor their followers, and collaborate in the exciting early development of monasticism and the Church itself.

She will share the adventure of meeting these women, including examples of Early Christian Art. Among them are: Lydia, the purple-fabric dealer and the Deacon Phoebe from the St. Paul's ministry, the saints Thekla and Perpetua, remembered crying out in the passion of their martyrdom.

VK McCarty ('11) served as Acquisitions Librarian at General Seminary 2000-2015, and also for several years as copy editor for both of General's regular publications. She copy-edited Through the Gates into the City: A Metropolis, a Seminary, a Chapel by Tim Boggs, The Vows Books by Distinguished GTS Alum Clark Berge, as well as his newest book, Running for Resurrection, and she continues to lecture in Ascetical Theology at General and at St. Luke in the Fields.

M.Div. Virtual Open House

Are you interested in vocational ministry in The Episcopal Church but unsure of how a theological degree fits into your life and work? The General Theological Seminary will begin implementing hybrid degree programs beginning Fall 2022.

On Thursday, December 16 at 6pm Eastern, join GTS’ distance learning program director April Stace for a virtual open house. Learn about our hybrid program, hear from prospective students, and continue to discern if General is the place God is calling you. Register here for this exciting conversation. (If you cannot make this date, future open houses will be January 20 and February 17.)

Hybrid learning provides a rigorous, spiritually-formative, and context-affirming theological education. A hybrid model at GTS will include:

- Full tuition funded for the first 15 accepted Master of Divinity students for the Fall 2022 school year.

- Student access to synchronous and asynchronous instruction from GTS faculty.

- Week-long intensives three times a year at the Close in Manhattan, beginning August 29, 2022.

- Study beside committed mentors and gather with driven seminarians prepared to support you in your work of renewal and reconciliation.

“For a long time, seminaries understood formation as something that can only happen in one particular place and in one particular way. That has led to, at times, a tragic disconnect between seminary education and actual, lived ministry. This is a rupture that we can address, in part, by lifting up and centering the diverse contexts of seminary students as meaningful, formational, and, in fact, our conversation partners and guides for teaching the art of ministry.”

The Rev. Dr. April Stace

Magnificent, Marxist, Mary: Textual Light on Advent’s Brightest Star

The presentation seeks to dispel images of Mary as “meek” and “mild” and replace them with understandings of a brave, radical teenage girl. Exploring stories of Mary’s spiritual sisters from the Hebrew Bible, Miriam and Hannah, leads us to appreciate Mary’s courage and theology. Textual exegesis combines with images, music, and video in this engaging presentation. With Advent and Christmas fast approaching, we hope you will gain fascinating insights about Christianity’s most famous woman.

The Rev. Dr. Julie Faith Parker is Professor of Biblical Studies and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. She holds a Ph.D. in Old Testament/Hebrew Bible from Yale University (awarded with distinction), an S.T.M. from Yale Divinity School, an M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary (New York), and a B.A. from Hamilton College (Phi Beta Kappa). She is ordained in the United Methodist Church and has authored or edited seven books and many articles.
